The GC boys wont care about a break up the road, they will happily have an easier day, but the sprinters might like a shot ahead of Rome. However but if Mad Mads is in contention then he's going to make the pace high on the early hills to drop the pure fast men.

I think a breakaway will get away and succeed tbh.

Purito in 2012 lost the lead in the final time trial to Hesjedal. That was the year of the time trial bike wheel that kept spinning after a crash, leading to incredible accusations of motor use.

In 2010, Basso escaped up the Mortirolo on stage 19, Arroyo didn't gamble on Stage 20 and the final time trial wasn't long enough to change the winner.

Yes, Carapaz has previous, losing from an 'unassailable' position to Hindley.
Carapaz and del Torro have explosive qualities that could go either way for them but Yates is a steady diesel.
Makes it tricky to pick but I'm counting Gee out... I think!

Massive gaps are possible (even likely) atop Finestre. Big changes in GC are still entirely possible, especially with such a tough stage the day before.

Do we think? When Froome/Sky went long, he did most of the damage the other side of the Finestre. I think his advantage over the top was about 30 seconds. Not to be sniffed at, but he wasn't minutes clear of Dumoulin et al. Obviously Yates lost huge time there but that was probably as much down to him cracking as Froome attacking.

The 2010 edition was the best grand tour in many a year. Arroyo got the pink because he was in a mahoosive break that inexplicably gained about 20 minutes in horrendous weather. That year also arguably spawned the birth of Strade Bianche as a classic. They also scaled the Mortirolo, Zoncolan, Gavia et al. An epic race.

Yes Froome ended up putting 3min ish into Carapaz, Dumoulin, Pinot and Lopez, but most of that was those 4 and other chasers not wanting to do the work to chase back the initial small gap / wanting to wait for the odd domestique to help.... Froome just created the gap over the gravel section and then got his head down on the descent and remaining kms. He'd also set up an army of team Sky with fuel for him at key points, which Dumoulin and co probably hadnt.

Yates was almost 40 mins back just ahead of the Autobus, having cracked well before Froome took off IIRC

He's unlikely to break top 5 that's for sure and going through other way isn't impossible

In all seriousness he must be gutted ..... Toro took his chances on the strade and from.there on just asserted himself. God knows what's going on in his head ... He won the fist mountain ISH top finish . What happened?

Bernal has been quality....more disappointed in Arensman
