I'm a occasional helmet wearer... Depends on where/what i'm riding, but that's my choice.. I'm not going to tell someone what they should do with their own heads, but if I see something that is just plain wrong or possibly even dangerous, I feel I should, as politely as possible assist them.

Just popped to the shops, as locking our bikes up a bloke walks out the shop & upto the bike chained at the next rail, He put his helmet on then started to unlock his bike..I was pretty sure he had it on the wrong way round! I did a couple of sneaky peeks while fiddling with my lock, just to be sure it wasn't some new fangled design, but it was defo the wrong way round.
I very politley said "Excuse me, not sure if you realise but you've got your lid on the wrong way round, it could actualy be dangerous like that"
He looked at me for a few seconds, then smiled & said "Thnak you so much, I spent ages moving the straps to get it sit right on me head, nearly didn't bother with it, it took me so long..Only wear it 'cause me kid moaned - he has to wear one for school & hates it, so am trying to set a good example" He took it off & we had a go at the straps, few wiggles later it was on his head just fine. Once again he thanked me & then rode off

30 minutes we are on our way home #2 asks if we can stop at the park..Why not..? So off he goes up the climbing frame. As I was sat on the bench a mum came up with 2 little uns on bikes, both wearing helmets, but one was exactly the same as the blokes at the shops - On the wrong way round, the others was so far back on it's head the back of the helmnet was touching it's neck.
She sat on the bench next to me, and again I polilty said "Excuse me....." Only this time I got a load of abuse, I will not print what she said, but it was along the lines of 'Who the #### are you & what the #### has it got to do with you' I took a deep breath, smiled & called to Fynn we were leaving, as we got on our bikes, she shouted someting about 'not even wearing ####ing helmets, so what the #### would you ####ing know anyways'

Maybe i'll keep my mouth shut next time...???

Considering how useless safety equipment is when it's not used properly, it's not interfering.

At risk of starting yet another protracted conversation on helmet use, I thought this thread was going to be about other telling you that you should wear a helmet. One of my pet peeves is people (usually non-cyclists) telling me that I should be wearing a helmet.

That and non-cyclists telling me that my tyres are worn because "they don't have any tread on them"

Ive had this happen 4 times in the last two weeks

Back to the OP, I wouldnt worry about it. There is no helping some people. At least you managed to help the first chap.

Darwin, leave them to it !

Some folk are terrible.

I have turned the forks round on a kids bike - just so happened to be a friend's kids bike - we'd gone for a picnic, and the kids took bikes, I had a multi-tool in the car and fixed it.

Nah, you did the right thing. Just sorry you ended up with a mouthful of abuse.

If I'd got it (whatever "it" may be) wrong, I'd want to know and in the event of something horrible happening as a result, would hate to think that someone knew but didn't speak up.

Cheers, I think it was more the way she responded that upset me, there really was no need for the swearwords or the attitude, I'm not a dainty woman, I certainly don't intimidate easily, but I was shocked at the visciouness especially considering we were in a playpark with about 15/20 kids playing all around us..
Yep some people just can't be helped

The greatest mark of a human being is an ability to show humility and to have the ability to admit to having got it wrong. Having the good grace to say thanks is all it takes.

The first person is clearly a decent human being and deserves to have the use of a bicycle.
The second person is not and does not.

I don't think I have ever seen anybody with a helmet on the wrong way round... what are the odds you found multiple stupidity victims on one trip out...

FWIW, I agree with Fossy, leave 'em to it.

Box Hill the other day some chap was wearing a child's helmet perched right on the top of his head. Have seen a few on backwards as well. Must admit to having been one of the "tutters" when I used to see people out like that, but have to remind myself that my helmet until recently was a good ten years old, so pretty rubbish really, so who am I to comment?

BTW: my mate ran into a tree yesterday on a night MTB ride; broke his lid and he needed 6 stitches in his noggin. Off road I'll always wear one.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I leave them to it these days , given the normal response you get when you try to help people i do not waste my time or energy these days unless something is clearly dangerous....
