Had a great commute in today.

I somehow found my legs. They were turning the pedals quite nicely, shame my breathing was absolute poo though, think I'm coming down with a cold or chest infection.

Anyway, on my route is a section that goes over the motorway

Not exactly huge and not even remotely difficult. Usually I pootle over it at about 12mph.

Today though I did something I have never done before, and this is probably going to sound so stupid to some of you here, I got out of the saddle and pushed like a madman. I hit 20mph on that bit of road, LOL.

Also for most of my journey I was in the big ring too.

So that's enough of my good fortune for today, just can't wait to get out of work now to do the return journey.

following wind?

I came home like a rocket on Friday, ran out of gears at one point

I've ridden the entire last two years in the big ring barring Ditchling Beacon twice

Strange....Im having to drop into the small ring.

Also struggling with a chest infection caused by a long stint of work no doubt.

I barely ride in the big ring, and never do on my commute, i can do over 30 mph without running out of gears on the 34tooth, imagine what it would be like in the 50

Aren't you still on junior gearing?

What gearing is that then?

I've got a compact double and a 12t rear smallest, that's a little over 30 for me without upping cadence

but I've had triples and always ridden in the big ring, I did use to grind though before learning cadence

11t rear smallest, no idea what the whole range is, but i'm a spinner, i have no problems with doing 140rpm. and will average 110rpm on most days.

30mph = about 125ppm on 34:11... with the chain a gnats pube away from the big chainring & risking snagging the top chainring, a real painful place to be if the big chainring grabs the chain at >100ppm

Personally I prefer a 12-23 cassette with a 42/54 chainring, at 125ppm that's a bit over 30mph on 42:13 with no risk of chainring snagging. I don't use the big chainring with a vengeance that often but when I do the results are fairly spectacular... like around 42mph down hill for over 1/2 a mile

Never said i was in the 11t at that speed  never checked with ring i'm in when honking it, will have to check next time.

Probably not in the 11t, as there is a slight rub on the front derailer when on the smallest ring.

I suspect that when I'm going over 30 I'm on a big hill and not too bothered about going much faster
