Anyone else feel like going AWOL sometimes...
I feel like it completely off-grid nomadic life ATM.
I guess an ethical alternative to suicide.

I'd be no good at going AWOL. I've got a dodgy knee and I'm a hopeless at cooking if I had to go off grid. I'd be good at wearing the same clothes for weeks on end though. My map reading skills are barely adequate so it wouldn't be long before I'd be seriously lost. I'll stick to riding my bike three times a week and coming back to bricks and mortar.

Anyone else feel like going AWOL sometimes...

I set off around the world a little over 26 years ago. Unlike Karl, I was more than happy to use public transport such as buses and trains and ferries to move on. Visited all seven continents. Only rule I had was not to fly, once I had landed on a continent. I only flew between continents. I would pop into an Internet cafe about once every six weeks to pick up any emails, and check bank balances.

My trip took me 19 months, not 28 years.

I did think about selling everything and buying a canal boat at one point

then just wandering around with no base - either geographically or socially

but I reckon I need contact with people otherwise I can become weird (or - as some say - more weird)
not in a bad sense - but not good for me

then family appeared thanks to SWMBO and grand kids and all that

Once a Wheeler

…always a wheeler
Interesting idea. It reminds me of a conversation I had with an experienced Alpine guide when I was walking in Switzerland. The conversation turned to hunting and he revealed that he had a hunting licence. I remarked that it must be difficult to get an adult ibex down to the plain after shooting it and he said it was not too bad because he had a home-made bothy hidden in the mountains and would bring the meat down from there over a period of weeks, temperatures in the bothy being below freezing and so preserving the meat. I joked that there must be a hidden population of bothy dwellers in the mountains: to my surprise, he nodded. He remarked that Switzerland still had its hermits but few people knew where they were. He firmly refused to give any more details. So, the AWOLs are there; but hidden; and it would be up to you to find or build your bothy. Sheds an interesting light on the history of the religious hermits.
