The gnome was absolutely decimated. It's now in about 10 pieces in a pile in the garden.

Needless to say, my wife wasn't best pleased..

You might explain to your wife that the gnome was supposed to protect the entire garden. Instead he was unable to protect the bench, the garden, or the bike, and ultimately, yourself. Therefore the gnome was in a compromised/defective state, and required replacement. It was a good thing this was found out now, instead of in the spring, when a garden planting would have been in peril.

I hope this is worth it - the gnome wont think so...

Found a small scratch (like, tiny) on the frame, so thankfully the bike suffered the least.

My pride hurts the most at the moment

At least it happened in the garden. It could have been in public, or on a road or something. Gnome's the only witness, and he won't be talking.

My advice to anyone going clipless from here on will most definitely be...to make sure they have a Sacrificial Gnome prior to practicing! :smile:
