Going to visit my local Polski Sklep - so what's worth buying?

I go to the Polish shop to buy Ptasie Mleczko. It's sort of the Polish equivalent of Milky Way.
I normally say Dziekuje (Thank you) when I've paid for it. This is normally greeted by the shop assistant with a look ranging from incredulous to 'sarky b*stard'.

bread is usually good from the Polish shops. the rye bread is lovely.

fruit juices and cordials. they have some very nice ones.

pierogi and the like are good.

some do cakes and will use local cake makers (or family) and these can be amazing. Girlski's brother-in-law makes incredible cakes for a Polish shop.

Kabanosy Wieprzowe (Pork Kabanos). There are lots of different local variations in taste and texture - I prefer a hard dry oak smoked kabanos like these

I can't imagine the bread is in very good condition unless somebody is bringing the flour and baking it over here. You can never get good croissants for the same reason.

Croissants go stale the same day. Rye bread will stay fresh for four or five days if you keep it somewhere cool and not dry ie not in a paper bag. Loosely wrapped in a supermarket bag works for me. I wouldn't want it coming over from Poland, but there are plenty of regional Polish bakers who deliver all round their area.

They do Jaffa Cake type biscuits with different fillings like black cherry.

Fags. They might keep them out the back, but if you get to know the owner then they're much cheaper than UK tax paid cigarettes.

There was a good documentary on Channel 4 a while ago called something like "Bradford, city of Dreams". One of the people featured was a polish man was was an accounts manager when he lived in Poland but came from a family of butchers. He prepared meat in a traditional Polish style at his own butchers/smoke house in Bradford and sold locally. They looked awesome. Like everything there's differing levels of quality with all foods.

Some of the supermarket bought Polish sweets I tried a few years ago were pretty awesome. I think I've just contradicted my on point on quality.

My Polish wife to be has just sent me a picture text of all the goodies she's just bought from our local Polish deli - herrings, various sausages (I love all of them), real cheesecake, some cheese and a mystery bag. Motivation enough for a fast ride home methinks!

It's a pity the Booths supermarkets empire doesn't extend to Meanwood; I see that Ilkley, Ripon and Settle are your nearest. They have superb locally-made produce.

Isnt Booths part of the Waitrose group though?
