When I was very young I took great solace out of the realisation that in Britain I would probably never have my life abruptly ended by a volcano, earthquake or by wild animal.

I don't think I've ever grown out of embracing that solace.

You're right Andrew, we should be very thankful. Several years ago we went to Australia with a school exchange trip. The number of stingy, bitey things lying in wait for you there is just astonishing.

I think Bill Bryson summed up Australia by saying it's a beautiful place; it's just a shame everything there is trying to kill you!

Must say it was a damn good job the kid had a load of winter clothing on, the tallons would normally go straight through cotton and skin with ease. I recon the weight wouldn't have been a problem, probably the parent's screaming !

[QUOTE 2211288, member: 259"]When I was a kid I always used to be terrified by the rabies posters when leaving the UK. As soon as you got off the ferry on the other side, thousands of enraged, slavering dogs would apparently attack you and infect you with rabies. There used to be questions askied in the Commons about the digging of the Channel Tunnel and the imminent collapse of most of Kent into an apocalyptic zombies dawn of the dead style apocalypse.

And now I find out that I'm not even safe in Canada - or Scotland!

So the rabid French rats skipped England and headed straight for Scotland?
