A strangely obsessive game for some.

I cant stand golf.

I once worked on a shift where everyone was a golfist other than me, even the Inspector. All day long they'd talk about golf bats and their stuff and it was impossible to have a conversation about anything else. It became so intolerable I put in a request to swap to a different shift.

The biggest problem with Golf is the elitist clubs with their petty rules and stupid dress codes. Mainly run by men with small man syndrome. No wonder they can’t attract younger members

It's a bit like the Curling in that, most people doing it are older or pensioners, so there will always be a steady stream of old farts taking it up, regardless of the young (who'll be out working and so on anyway).

Weirdly though, our Curling Club seems to be bucking the trend and we must have one of the lowest average ages for an (adult) club in the area.

At least with Curling, most of us don't take ourselves too seriously and it's based on camaraderie and respect.

Sounds like my dad’s lawn bowling club. No one under 65 plays lawn bowls. And some of the clubs he plays against are very strict on wearing the stupid clothing.

I used to play golf occasionally, but have my clubs away about 10 years ago. There is quite a high bar to entry, as you do need the kit and to be at least able to hit the ball reasonably well just to start playing.

I would enjoy golf if it wasn’t for all the other people. The courses I played were mainly pubic courses. They were too busy with too many people playing far too slowly. It could take 5 hours to complete the round.

It is a very frustrating game, and people take it far too seriously.

Crazy golf is far superior.

All clubs are the same, that’s why I’m not a member of any. I was in the Porsche Club GB years ago and that was beset with petty politics. Unfortunately many clubs seem to be run by fairly unpleasant people who haven’t achieved much in their working career, perhaps it’s because they have zero people skills!

There is a lot more to Curling than bowls, they are not the same, despite what people think.

I've done both (albeit, indoor). I was never a member of a club though, we did it through another group I was involved with.

I know what you mean though, most people are of a 'certain age' and when I joined my Curling club, I must have brought the average age of the club down by about 30 years! 🤣

Nowadays, our club is more varied age - wise, stretching from people in their '30s' through to a guy (who also golfs) in his early/mid '70s'. Gone are the days of it being mainly old codgers in their '70s' or '80s' (we had a player who only stopped playing at 86 at one point. He was determined to get to 90, but, alas).

With about 8,000 Curlers in Scotland, we cannot afford to take ourselves too seriously anyway and you are only obliged to wear 'silly' clothing for certain things.

Our club seems to be ok at the moment, but then, we have a few very capable guys who run it, so we are reasonably ok.
