Lord of the Rings. Thousands of good pages build up to "And they all sailed away in a boat"
Disagree! The Hollywood ending would have been just after the ring was destroyed. But I liked the fact Tolkien tied up all the loose ends and what happened to who etc. To get the sailing away in a boat end you would have to have read the silmarilion

Worst 'cop out' ending I have read My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult (Book group read - not my choice) They changed the ending for the film which her fans were up in arms about but it was much more realistic

 ultimate geek? Actually I couldn't read it but for a while i had a long drive to work and so rented it on tape and listened to it that way Tedious stuff on the whole but makes the ending of LoTR more undestandable

But the boat thing was just a metaphor for the afterlife (hence the reference to the "Grey Havens"). I much preferred the ending in the book to the film, where, having defeated Sauron, they then had to reclaim the Shire from Saruman.

I also think Captain Corelli had a good ending - and not quite as sad as some suggest.
