Shaped grips kept twisting around with use, never staying horizontal, so I gave up on them in the end

This is very true of all of the ones which are NOT clamped and rely on friction to hold them.

Ergons and Specialized BG lock-on ones (and others) have a proper clamp and do not shift at all.

I found standard round grips with decent bar ends such as the those mentioned or Giant Contact Ergo's (Bar Ends) helped a great deal with road vibration and hand tiredness.
Shaped grips kept twisting around with use, never staying horizontal, so I gave up on them in the end, but having the bar ends made me far more comfortable on longer runs.

The specialised ones now have screwed fittings to lock the flats in position.
(As I notice bikepete has just said.

I suffer from numb hands after only a couple miles with any grips. I think these help but I still loose all feeling in my fingers. Unnerving when it first started happening but I now realise that even though I don't get much feedback from them, my fingers still respond to "commands" At least with these grips I can still have reasonable control with the palms. Riding with my palms on ordinary round grips risked having the bars snatched from my hands when hitting any unexpected bump.

Fancy a pair of those Ergon ones though.

Personally pain in my arms / wrists / hands I would assume I'm leaning too much on my hands and raise my bars a little bit.
