Oh, If you were turning into a side road and the pedestrian was about to cross it, she would have had priority - so you should have stopped and smiled.

That depends on at which point the manoeuvre had begun. If the cyclist has already crossed the carriageway and then the pedestrian had started to cross (having not noticed the cyclist) then it's obviously safer for everyone if the cyclist continues the manoeuvre and the pedestrian stops.

Oh, come on! If she had stepped into the road I would have stopped on the busy main road, as I do most days when iPeds or other unobservant people cross roads without any consideration or even looking.

The nice thing was that she looked and by her actions gave way to me when she didn't need to. It was nice and doesn't happen too often, which is why I remember it. She obviously felt good about it too.

If everyone followed the 'right of way' thing that you highlight, then there would be no need to teach kids to use the green cross code - nice ideal, but so far away from reality.

As DavidC says, it is good to thank people that make an effort to be considerate, whatever rights they have.
