Any off road routes.... ? I think stone/gravel is better than tarmac for grip.....

No more commutes for me..booked this week off.

Take it easy tomorrow everyone.

From the past few days gritting and snow fall. i can safely say the main roads for me should be fine. luckily i can make a route that is just main roads  the only dodgy part will be getting the bike to the road.

I'm really worried about this now but feel there's no way I can not give it my best shot and end up with an injury that makes things worse. Stupid eh?

I've texted two of my bosses to let them know how I feel. I can see me working over Christmas. Or being on crutches.

What tyres are you doing it on Longers? I find that my 35mm tyres and walking boots work well for such snow journeys. The problem is that the road you're talking about if that freezes rock solid then you got the funny ice patterns that are lethal downhill. In the past I found that walking sections and then doing the others at 8 or 9mph works.

Best of luck anyway .

Its gone a bit slushy here now,if it does not freeze then it's going to be easy.If it does then it should be fun on the side roads and the edges of the main roads, either way it will be quicker than driving !

It's bad here in Bredbury/Woodley and Romiley.

Cars abandoned getting out of Romiley towards Bredbury, a bus in a lamp post.... not looking good, certainly very cold. Mate had to reverse down one hill as someone abandoned at the top of a hill on a corner...blocked it..........

We've exhausted the grit bin trying to clear a 200 foot long area of ice/compacted snow..... not worked............

Pulling the kids to school on sledges tomorrow, then going round to the in-laws, and gritting their road - no-one else bothers doing it (unlike our road)....

Longers - do you have a mtb...low pressures (20 psi) should help...... it's bad out there at the moment.. you might be better on pavements actually......those kids seem to be able to do it...

I do. In bits.

On that I'd have a go and would have a much better chance.

Feel like wimp, but a sensible one without the right gear for it and am getting the taxi paid for which is very kind of them. Last year the driver didn't charge because he reckoned we didn't go far enough.

Hope you have safe journeys or even better don't have to go out!

It sounds like you're making a sensible and informed decision - nothing to feel wimpish about, Longers! I conducted a recce walk earlier along part of my commute - it looks OK (more ice on the pavement than road), but I'll double-check in the morning too.

It's not taking a solo tumble that concerns me so much(I take it easy and am layered up), but it's the threat of another vehicle sliding into me that worries me.
