SimonC - one thing Scarboro does lack is decent boozers (Eastborough has some rough holes indeed). The Golden Ball by the harbour is pretty good, though.

All those family Sundays out at the sea-side in the early 60s... if it rained we sat in the car looking out at the sea, all steamed up and ate our salmon sandwiches [mixed with vinegar and a bit of salt] and had a thermos of tea].
Bank Holidays spent sat in the queue at Malton on the A64.

In fact, one of the few things that had changed was that at the Naval Warfare at Peasholm park, what was very definitely the German Navy in the 70s and 80s was now just called 'The Enemy'..
 You're bringing back memories there Alan W, I was surprised to see that show still running on a brief re-visit some 10 years ago.

Any good boozers to recommend?? Digs are on a road running up from seafront, so any nearby would be good.
While it's true there aren't many non-Carling establishments, I'd recommend the Valley, which gets mentioned in CAMRA dispatches, or possibly the Merchant, although you'll note it's a theme bar..

And the Peasholm Sea battles are running as of last Saturday..

I went there once when I was 17 during a school field trip, and we played football on the beach, and I managed to kick the football right at my teacher's nuts, leaving him in tears.

There's also that traditional ballad 'Scarborough Fair' about the place, the origins of the lyrics date back to the 1670s, remarkable seeing as Paul 'thieving scum' Simon only wrote it in the 1960s.

I've lived in West Yorkshire for 25 years but I've not yet made it over to the East coast. I must ride over there one day and spend some time visiting Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Robin Hoods Bay and all those other places I've heard so much about.

My goodness Colin - I'm shocked

My Mum's aunt and uncle had a little house at Flamborough so we got to spend a fair amount of time around there. In fact, I've got a photo on the wall (pre-digital) taken at Flamborough Beach but no one believes me and assumes it's actually Australia or some other exotic hot place as the sea is so blue-green and fades on the horizon into the cobalt blue sky and there are people in the foreground playing in the rock pools - totally idyllic

I'm a well-travelled chap, and Scarboro' is one of my favourite places in the world. My auntie lived there - in fact, my earliest memory is of lying in my pram in the kitchen of the B&B she owned up by the castle. Our family used to go at least twice a year until she died, and I didn't visit again until about fifteen years ago. I was worried that all the things that made it so magical for us as kids would have gone - but when we went back, not much was different (redevelopments apart - the Corner Bar and seawater pool have gone). In fact, one of the few things that had changed was that at the Naval Warfare at Peasholm park, what was very definitely the German Navy in the 70s and 80s was now just called 'The Enemy'.

Harbour Bar... Hispaniola on the Mere ... Jacomelli's... Futurist Theatre... Corrigan's amusements ... MV Coronia ... Harrybob's Cave ... Boyes' Dept Store ... Olivers Mount ... Scalby Mills ... Marineland ... Corner Bar ... The Spa ... Grand Hotel ... John Werrit's "fancy goods" shop ... Italian Gardens ...

*sigh*

damn, I seem to have something in my eye.

Ongoing redevelopment round the North Bay. The Corner Cafe and Aquarius pool are both gone but much else threatened by 'Project Zenith' survived. The open air theatre in Northstead Manor Gardens has been refurbished. The water chute survives as do the paddle boays. The North Bay Railway still runs to Scalby Mills. Neptune and Triton are now assisted by a couple of other engines though it was never the same after the coaches were roofed in. The Amusements & cafe at Scalby Mills, built as part of sea defence upgrades in 63-65, went in the eighties but were replaced by the Sea Life Centre. Many of the beach chalets succumbed to storms and vandalism and that end of the bay is rather quiet without the occupant families

Hispaniola moved from the mere and now sails in the South Bay. Probably more fun but kids no longer land on the pirates island and leave clutching a 'doubloon'. Ken Dodd still returns to the Futurist and Jacomelli's 'lemon tops' are as good as ever.

The 'Family Bingo' opposite the South Bay merry go bouts, was my other childhood memory, but would never the same without (Great) Uncle Tom in the back corner - and gambling rules now prevent kids playing.

Just recalled, when we used to stay at Burniston Barracks (now demolished), on the cliff tops, just above the North Bay, during the summer months, we used to get hammered on a night in the bars around the South Bay, and on the way back to camp we would stop off at the open air swimming pool at Peasholme park, climb the fence and go skinny dipping.

The bill would usually turn up at some point which ment grabbing your clothes and legging it fast, getting dressed as you ran, valuble skills which came in usefull later on in my life when I've had to jump from windows on occasions to prevent being caught on the job.
