I can understand an accident but covering it up is beyond comprehension, and not even showing any remorse.

perhaps there should be a group of Ninja cyclists going round avenging these deaths, might make some drivers think if there was a possibility of being assasinated by Lycra clad blokes in a dark alley.

I am half joking btw....

It seems to me that the responsibilities and liabilities for drivers of motor vehicles are decreasing. More and more drivers are just forgiven for causing accidents.

I can understand everyone makes mistakes, but when those mistakes happen when in charge of a motor vehicle, its likely to cause loss of life (compared to other activities)!

It just seems to be that accidents are becoming an inevitable risk when driving and if there is a fatality, well.... it happens

No other dangerous activity is treated this way!;)

The thing that gets me is that it is still considered a mistake, even though he drove 30 miles to destroy the evidence.

How about if I just clipped the wheel of a cyclist without any harm to cyclist or bike? Could I just get a little "roughed up" by the Lycra clad blokes in a dark alley? There's one along the route I cycle - do you need timings and directions? ;)

20 mph speed limits are totally impractical. They would slow me down on my bike. Ok if you plod along at 8mph but not a good move if you can easily exceed 20mph on a bike.

Crankarm do you have children?

I was thinking of it more for truck drivers who try to cover their tracks or perhaps motorists that kill cyclists in a fit of pique because they dared to object to some cretinous behaviour and werent packing a tonne and a half of aging Escort to back it up.

J4CKO, I think, either you ...or me...has got the wrong end of HC's stick there, I don't think HC was trying to make light of the situation, merely eluding to the fact that chaps in lycra in a dark alley may not be as unattractive a proposition (to some) as it sounds?

Perhaps I'm wrong tho

No. it's just that as a father of four forget the hysteria about pederasts and the rest. The greatest fear, when the children were young, was always the traffic just ouitside the front door. I really resent drivers who regard residential roads as their own personal drag strip. Bring on 20mph in all residential streets as soon as possible. Preferably policed by average speed cameras rather than speed bumps.

In some states in usa if you hit a cyclist or a pedestrian whilst driving a motor vechile the charge is assault with a deadly weapon.

I'd love to see a lot more 20mph zones. I understand the law is being relaxed (or may have already been), to make this easier for local authorities to create them. Under the old law, I believe it needed someone's approval (Secretary of State, maybe?), along with special design features, including speed bumps, to slow the traffic down. I don't know if the new regulations will still need these, or whether speed cameras would be an option. I presume cameras will become cheaper in real terms if even more of them are built.

Here in Sheffield we've had a couple of 20 zones for years, complete with traffic calming, ramps and pinch points on entry, and a few sleeping policemen (but not too many IMO). I'm only familiar with one of them, and it seems to work well. Both of the 20mph zones are made up of fairly high density housing, with lots of parking on the streets. Also they were used as rat runs by commuters, and so some action was needed.

I'm not sure if local authorities will create many 20 zones, other than this type - but I hope they do.

I think if the max limit of 30 mph were actually enforced in many areas this would be a major break through in the battle against drivers who curently stick two fingers up and drive considerably in excess of the speed limits. The local lollipop lady has recently hung up her sign and yellow coat for good in resignation as she is sick and tired of being verbally abused and jumping for her life as speeding drivers aim their cars directly at her when she steps into the road or shepherding kids across the road .
