I'm old enough to remember both. I don't think either has any connection with AICMFP. It's from a newspaper competition that predates both. I learnt about it from Graham Green's Brighton Rock.

Yeah you're right about the five pounds thing, but I would suggest it is now popularly, even if strictly erroneously, associated with Spike for some reason. The Likely Lads reference was to the episode where they try to get through the day without hearing the result of a football match, just like the OP and his race result..

Anyway, I didn't even know this had happened so I didn't feel at all sorry for him, I did feel sorry for Damon Hill when in that Arrows car and he nearly won a Grand Prix against the odds all those years ago.

With 5 minutes to go Kazuki Nakajima's Toyota car breaks down whilst leading this years Le Mans 24 hr motor race handing the victory to Porsche
I don't follow motor sport, but isn't the point of Le Mans endurance? Isn't this like feeling sorry for the second guy in a grand prix because he was a tiny bit slower? If you've got to keep the car going for 24 hours and you only make 23.55, then haven't you just failed at the thing that the race was testing?

(sorry about the rhetorical questions; I may be missing the point entirely, so I am using Australian Rising Intonation)

Edit: one more question - do many people record and watch a 24 hour race?

Just watching the highlights. Feck the prototype cars have all gone ugly. They all look like they are drawn by 6 year olds.

It's like R J Mitchell never had a good idea. Computer modelling and wind tunnels have ruined art.

Brilliant race, caught up last night hand hadn't seen the spoilers.

I just had a feeling something would happen, but 3 mins left of a 24 hr race is unreal

Well done Porsche!

I was stood at the Ford chicanes watching the final 3 hours, the cheer from the Porsche Experience building could be heard above the GT race engines. From what I have read the root cause of the problem was a cracked carbon fibre turbo inlet manifold, that resulted in the turbo failure on the Toyota.

Good to see that the ACO and FIA saw sense and did not exclude the Risi Ferrari for it's lead lights not working correctly. They were told to pit to fix them after Ford protested during the race, then shown the black/orange flag ordering them to stop and fix it, they ignored them. Earlier during the race both Porsche and Audi were allowed to race with their cars showing the wrong positions for about 2 hours without being hauled into the pits for repairs.
