GPS while touring

We're off on the C2C next week - very exciting! Usually I use my iPhone with everytrail to track my rides, but this is only for a couple of hours max! I expect we will be out for rather longer than that, and I don't want my phone to die and lose all the data - I'm anal like that

Does anyone have any tips on extending iPhone battery life? Mobile chargers? I already have it on standby mode. Don't know if airplane mode would help?

Arrivée just reviewed one from Pedalpower.

If you are anal about data, a Garmin is going to be lot better for you. The Etrex series run about 24 hours on 2 AA cells.

There's a few chargers around like the "power monkey"

These will top-up your phones battery life but they're not able to fully recharge my smart phone. They should be able to keep the phone alive for the day allwing you to fully recharge it fully over-night.

I got a price list through from Pedalpower a while ago.
By the time you've bought one of their leads and a dynamo wheel this certainly doesn't work out cheap. Also isn't the coast to coast off-road? i'm not sure just how well dynamo work on MTBs being ridden at relatively low speeds.
