Not being able to spell "spelled" or pronounce "pronunciation" makes me want to kill some puppies. Nothing worse. In fact, the word "spelt" sends me into a murderous frenzy.

Whereas I tend to think of past tenses ending with a -t as being acceptable variations on the widely prevalent -ed. I learnt it that way.

A pedant would say that's wrong. I say it's right. Why? Essentially because it's clear, which is what really matters. And because BBQS, which is 'correct', just looks daft, and is less easily grasped.

How would you write Do's & Don'ts? Dos & Don'ts? Then you're a fool, even if 'correct'. The written language is about communicating, not showing how well you know the rules. More importantly, the rules exist only to aid communication; when they actively impede it, they must retire gracefully. Them's my rules.

Rules exist to clearly identify the idiots who are unable to follow them. It's a self selecting group.

Er, no they don't. The 30MPH limit doesn't exist to enable identification of those travelling at 40, it exists to restrict drivers' speeds to 30MPH or below.
