The punnet I have at the moment are virtually liquid inside, like biting into a balloon filled with water. And about as tasty.

Theoretically you can take the packaging and receipt back to the shop for a refund, I have on occasions.
We used to be told of complaints, product, the nature of the complaint..it clicks up against the supplier./packer and the supermarkets can and do get very annoyed when theres too many complaints so it is worth getting a refund if only because it feeds back to the supplier / packet. The last thing they want is a customer (the supermarket) breathing down their neck...and they do..with relish.
Equally, its a very perishable product, growing conditions, weather can effect quality and life of the product (Uruguay once had bad rains in the citrus growing season sone years ago...caused absolute havoc with crop yield and quality)

I'm on really good terms with the chap who runs the fruit & veg section in Tesco, and I'll always give him feedback on what I've had - good and bad. It goes both ways, as I bought some raspberries on his recommendation this evening.

Sometimes he's aware of the problem if something's not up to snuff, like a consignment of sweet peppers that were rotting within a couple of days, but other times he's not - like the carrots that looked fine on the outside, but were black and mushy in the middle.

That said, the higher up the range you move (especially with fresh produce), the more reliable the quality. The cheaper fruit & veg - especially fruit and things like green beans - can be so pot luck. As can the stuff that's on offer.

Yes, its down to customer (the supermarket) specifications and expectations.
M&S will have very robust specs, sugar contents, unannounced visits to inspect pricesses and quality, visual appeal, right down to 'time under the roof'..ie minimising the time product is in storage, to get the freshest possible.
Lower down the chain...you can guess

M&S grapes and produce in general is the best quality IMO. For grapes, it is best to pick specific varietals if possible, they tend to be better than generic red/green/black labelled grapes. Morrisons tend to have a decent variety; sable, cotton candy, candy pops under their 'explore' range. These tend to be sweeter as they have higher sugar content and are usually 2 for £4.
