grating noise coming from chain area

Hi i have a peculiar noise coming from the chain area, could be from cassette not really sure no noise when free wheeling. If i pedal lightly the grating noise is not so bad if the chain is under strain (going up hill ) the noise seems to get worst. nothing i rubbing checked all that happens in all gears. Any thoughts would be useful its really annoying.

How long has the chain been on the bike ...
Is the lock nut on the cassette tight... see if there is any play in the cassette !

There is a little bit of play in the cassette more than i would think is normal I will tighten it up and report back. Thanks for the reply.

That reminds me, mine was doing that yesterday. I forgot all about it until reading your suggestion. Out with the allen keys!
