Gravel/ mtb or road racing pedals

Hi everyone I've got a new bike with no pedals I'm not sure what ones to put on it. I like the idea of spd mtb pedals but my bike is a road racing bike and I think it will spoil the look.

Double sided SPD for convenience, other pedals for posing, nobody sees the pedals when clipped in.

How about single sided spds ?

I tried those and didn't like them. I got caught out a few times by the pedals not being the right way up when I tried to clip in.

I ended up with double-sided MTB SPD pedals on all of my bikes, and blow the looks!

No one can see the pedals when you’re riding anyhow. Shimano M520 are neat little double sided SPD pedals so no pedal flipping nonsense to clip in

That. What suits you best? That's the question you need to answer. A regular set of XT/XTR SPDs are hardly bigger than Speedplays, and smaller than most SPD-SLs or Looks.

I have the Shimano A600 SPDs on my road and gravel bikes; nice-looking, minimal, single-sided pedals that don't look out of place on a road bike IMO. Not sure of their status currently as nowhere seems to have stock, so they might be discontinued, but can still be had used on ebay for example

I recommend also considering how wide you want your stance, as it significantly impacts your comfort, pedalling efficiency and even knee injury risk:

Optionally, Shimano offers Ultegra and DuraAce SPD-SL pedals with a longer spindle width (used by elite cyclists like Mark Cavendish and me ):

Also, you can adjust your stance width on some Look pedals via Q-factor washers. Although they don’t offer as much width as the longer spindle SPD-SL pedals.
