I think EvH just did the solo and a bit of arrangement on Beat It didn't he? The rest was the dude from Toto.

How about Shot By Both Sides / Lipstick? That one's so good that Pete Shelley gave it to Howard DeVoto but then took it right back. Don't know if it's really a riff as much as a progression but I'm gonna count it for historical interest.

Certainly a great guitar solo but is it the best, that's all subjective?

ZZ Top: "La Grange"

A killer riff, would be in my top 10.
I'd have Another one bites the dust as well if the bass is allowed, oh, and Song 2 by Blur.

Black Sabbath Iron Man, Paranoid, also Neon Knights from the Dio Era
Dire Straits Sultans of Swing, Romeo & Juliet
Deep Purple Smoke on The Water (or the quickest way to get thrown out of a guitar shop!)
Chuck Berry Johnny B Goode

From Purple I almost prefer the Perfect Strangers riff.

Oh, and I thought it was Stairway to Heaven that got people thrown out of guitar shops.
