Greeting cycling tourists

Do you often see cycling tourists and wave enthusiastically at them? Or drive passed them and beep and wave?

I did the latter today. Driving towards a heavily-laden bike today I saw a flag flying from a pole at the rear. A New Zealand flag.

I beeped and waved my encouragement and he (an old fella - older than me anyway) smiled and waved back.

I felt an enormous pang of envy cos that's what I do/have done and know the delights and pleasures of long-distance touring.

Any one else look on with admiration and envy at the sight of a tourist on two wheels? Or is it just me who needs to get away more often?

And funnily enough, an hour afterwards, at the same place, I saw another tourist, sporting a very snazzy yellow and green cycling cap, but (un)fortunately it was too late to beep and wave.

Currently on tour in Europe ( at the finish line in Utrecht ) and our cycle from Delft to Gouda yesterday was full of people waving and saying hello.

Mind you the best place for that for me is whenever i have cycled in India especially the kids.

I will do it to other tourers i see.

If you keep quiet and follow them till they stop for a break, you often get a chance to steal their fantastic racks.

I do notice heavily laden bikes sometimes and often wonder about their journey, but usually when I'm in the car and can't stop to chat to them to my disappointment. I often assume they could be doing a JOGLE... But they could be going anywhere.

I'll be off on a mini-tour (5 days) of the Scottish borders in about 10 days... I appreciate the waves and beeps when touring, so keep it up

I see them quite often, as we seem to be some sort of side-trip on the Northern Tier Route (or maybe it's just the Motel 6) sometimes coming in on the trail or the road from the countryside. Most often, they want information as to where the Motel 6 is. (It's kind of convoluted,getting there, unless you are in a car.)

I appreciated the waves and the big wide berths and smiles from the car drivers this weekend, when I pull the trailer with picnic in I get snarky revs and near passes and rude comments.

When you make your 9 year old pull it you get indulgent smiles, wide wide passes, sitting behind patiently and shouts of well done lad... and then when they spot the smallest small person sandwiched in the middle of us, you get oh look there is a tiny one... a bit like wildlife watchers really.... or pehaps the sleeping bags on top of panniers makes them more amenable??

With one thing and another, I've been doing a bit of car camping lately and I'm always jealous when I see tourers on the campsite. At least in good weather. I generally have a shameless nose at their setup and ask where they're heading.

I suspect in your case they were phoning social services about putting a young boy to carry such a load

There are no bears in my garden. An harrier,inquisitive beagle,some weeds, and some chipmunks.
