Imagine my horror, when after cooking the wonderful looking fine green beans, purchased earlier, from one of the main 6 UK supermarkets, I noticed that they were from Guatemala!
Whilst I have no issues with farmers in Guatemala, and perhaps, I feel good with the fact that they have found a good export route, and good luck to them with the money they made from me, but I really hurt at the climate miles I have just cost the global environment. As I live in one of the areas in England which has many acres of farmland, and many growers of fine green beans are local to me, i am saddened that I didn't take the opportunity to check the origin of these beans ( as I normally do - no, really, I do!).

This means that thhe winter will be spent, cycling even more than I planned, to offset this globally costly mistake.

There's the mistake. Buy fresh produce on an open market or else a greengrocer or farm shop, as much as you can. I feel most supermarkets don't care what they sell you any more as long as it's cheap and in volume (some of the co-ops do better but they do sometimes do silly stuff which I think is because they hire workers from the other supermarkets and the elected members are now too far from the shops to manage them effectively). Actually, I'm almost surprised the country of origin was marked...

I agree - I usually use the local greengrocer for fresh daily purchases, whilst I wait for the OH, but I decided to to try the local, and newly opened 'supermarket' just for convenience, as I had a few other, non-food bits to get too. It's not something I will do again though...

It was mainly this sort of thing - miles, lack of seasonality and care in production - that was my reason for swapping from expecting to buy any 'product' at any time of the year for the weekly supply of an organic veg box.
I no longer have the 'choice', it is made for me, I just have to find ways to use what there is. Going well so far and also means I have to seriously study the recipe books.
