My Uncle bought one, a 1750 Vandem Plas version with a 5 speed manual gearbox..................Gawd it was fast (For the time)

With the stupid stick on 'Rolls Royce grille'..... specsavers.

Gosh Fast, and a death trap. One of my cycling club mates dad's had an Ambassador and a work colleague had a Princess - god awful cars with no brakes.

I don't think safety was quite an issue back then  look at some of the other cars about like the Viva and Avenger (Mind they stuck the 2.3 litre engine in that as the Avenger 'Tiger') and Fords were no better, mind by 76 I was working at a SAAB garage probably the safest car on the road at the time (Debatable between them and Volvo)
BMW made quirky little cars (after the war) like the 2 series and the Isetta and Japanese cars were a joke, in fact if you wanted a 'safe' car it was luxury brand/models only.

Oh and you're right about the Princess/Ambassador they were truly awful as were the later Maestro and Montego. xx(

I saw a Renault 5 on the local Tesco carpark this evening. It was a 1989 G reg, silver grey one. I would've taken some pics of it, but it was peeing it down, so I didn't fancy stopping my car and getting out.
