Tivo'd this programme (from SKY-Arts) yesterday & watched it a bit earlier.

Whilst not being a huge fan of Dire Straits, I certainly admire Knopflers guitar style, so it was interesting to see the stories behind the songs, & how they built up the music

'Money For Nothing' being a case in point, as he played a Gibson Les Paul on it

And;
1. That gorgeous National from the 'Brothers In Arms' cover
2. The Stratocaster
3. Writing 'Sultans Of Swing', 'Romeo & Juliet', etc....

This clip in fact shows him playing 'Money' by himself

Nice bit of pedal steel too, always enhances a tune.

I first heard the single version of Sultans of Swing on John Peel (ahem) years ago. I still have the 45. Fantastic pub rock. Unfortunately, years later, I was dragged screaming to their concert at Earls Court, post-Brothers in Arms. For someone who is no fan of "stadium rock", it really was dire.

Yes I can, Yes I am, Yes I did...Repeat.
I cant play like Knopfler...but its amazing how people as soon as they know i play guitar say..."go on play some dire straights"...and I'm 'like' why???

I love his work though...no plectrum...and he uses the guitars tone controlls well...I just remove the tone controls from my guitars lol!

Brothers in arms was my fav dire straights tune.
