+1 for Zappa, never 'got it' but then I don't get Vai or Satriani either.

Bought Passion & Warfare just 'cause of all the hullabaloo, now gathering dust.

I don't FEEL anything from uber technical players.

Maybe I am stuck in da blues.

I much prefer Satriani, he has a more bluesy element to his playing and is more melodic in my opinion. Having said that I haven't bought any of his stuff since Engines of creation.
As much as I enjoy a good bit of rock, these days I'm all about the jazz

Re the getting Zappa - perfectly fair not to get him IMHO. I love the stuff personally. For me Satriani and Vai et.al are all superb guitarists, technically world class and so on, I've got the solo albums but just don't enjoy listening to them for more than a few minutes but I can put on one of Zappa's Shut Up N Play / Guitar albums (that consist of just guitar solos) and quite happily listen to and get lost in the intricacies for hours.

Re the guitars - I've got a Stevie Ray Vaughn Fender Strat and a decent precision bass and not enough time to enjoy either properly!!

Might give Zappa another listen as it's been a few years now.

He gets played on Real XS (formerly Rock Radio) from time to time.

Think one of the problems I had with Zappa (if I recall correctly) was a live show/gig I watched on Sky where he did a lot of just talking & ranting. I think this may have been from his extremely bonkers period.

Do you know the Midnight Blue album by Kenny Burrell. Possibly the perfect blend of blues and lazy but brilliant jazz.

As close as you'll ever get to the man himself, plus I got to have another natter with Ted McKenna (drummer with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band before he joined Rory)

I had a very good & very funny guitar tutor who used to say "nice bit of Jazz" every time I hooked a bum note in.
Used to take a few minutes to stop laughing before I could concentrate again.

We shared the same 'off beat' (pardon the pun) sense of humour.

He would often hand me the tab to a song or practice sheet with the title re-named.

Enter the Cabin Boy was a favourite.

Do you know the Midnight Blue album by Kenny Burrell. Possibly the perfect blend of blues and lazy but brilliant jazz.

Kenny Burrell is one of my favourite guitarists. You are spot on about the mix of blues and Jazz, it's a key part of a lot of that late 50's early 60's hard bop - I love it. He's got amazing chops too, some of his pentatonic lines, if you whacked the distortion on, wouldn't be too out of place in any big rock/metal tune. If you like Kenny check out Grant Green another of my favourites, a very underrated player.

335 to me means Noel Gallagher, Chuck Berry & Johnny Marr amongst others.

The White Falcon is just eye candy, but features in the Black Stone Cherry live sets often... going to watch them (again) on 31st Oct in Mcr.

Went to see a mates band, The DTs in 85-86 at the Princess Charlotte (regular monthly gig and the guitarist was a guy called Steve Walwyn who plays a 'Tele' and has been in Dr Feelgood now for 20 years) and there was a 335 leant up against a Marshall. After a couple of numbers Simon (Simon 'Honeyboy' Hickling) announced that they had a guest tonight and a little fella wearing dungarees came on stage picked up the 335 then turned and walked to the mike to shout 'Awlright' . Steve Marriott, the Gibson looked huge on him.

Dave Edmunds is quite a well-renown singer/song-writer/producer/guitarist/performer

He did an entire album of Phil Specter influenced tracks (minus the wigs & gunshots!), called 'Subtle As A Flying Mallet', it's splendid!!!, with such tracks as;


He was in, & indeed, formed RockPile. with Nick Lowe, who later married Carlene Carter-Cash (Jonny & June Carters daughter)

Some interesting videos on the go here, been a bit AWOL lately so only just working my way through them.
I'm in awe of Stevie Vai. I mean, he must have massive hands. I struggle to get my thumb over the neck to mute the bass strings when I'm (badly) rocking it with my power chords. He makes it look easy. Probably because it is for him.

Anyway, still playing the guitar although over the Christmas period I only picked it up a handful of times. I'm not getting too bad now, people don't run away screaming at least.
Got GAS bad though. I have been trying to keep my numbers down though and have sold 2 to get 2.
My collection now consists of;
Yamaha C40A classical (just can't part with this one, as I have had it forever)
Washburn EAT12 electro acoustic
MIM Fender Telecaster (in a nice candy apple red) electric with Fender Mustang II modeling amp
Seagull S6

The Seagull S6 is my latest acquisition and I'm really pleased with it;
