Guy Martin does recumbents!!!!

For those who are unfamiliar Guy Martin is a British Engineer who does some brilliant programmes on the BBC about engineering and speed.

Here is a previous episode

This week he is looking at how far you can cycle in 24 hours

The interest for this site?

Two contributors are of note: Mike Burrows (Wind cheetah, and others) and Miles Kingsbury (KingCyle, K3 and others)

The potential for Guy Martin with these pioneers of recumbent cycling is looking like being good viewing

Is the programme on BBC or C4?

I like the way they seemed to imagine they'd broken the tandem 24hr record.

I was surprised the seats weren't mesh, wouldn't fancy sitting in a puddle of pee. xx(

It was all a bit make it up as you go along. I was surprised they didn't check with Andy Wilkinson, who still holds the recumbent end-to end record, and spent far longer on/in his faired hpv than those two. He solved the peeing problem by trial and error. I think he was riding a Burrows machine as well.

MIke Burrows Windcheetah with fairing

Funnily enough he was faster then this pair in theory

He did 530 miles in his first 24 hours. Considering that that included the hills of the South West as opposed to the flat track of Goodwood, one wonders what he could have done on a flat track

If you read the accounts of the Wilkinson LEJOG, they performed this under a strict set of rules including random independent checks of position and time.

I did not see any mention of this required scrutiny and checking in the programme. This would as a result never actually be a record

Not sure why both of them wore cycle helmets in an HPV on a closed track?!?!

Yes my first thought as they got into the trike was 'why a helmet?' Without them they'd have been more comfortable as a sweaty head for 24 hours is uncomfortable and they'd have had more room.

Even if it is a record it's only for distance on/in a faired sociable recumbent. Not many of those about.
Andy was a guest at our club many years ago and gave an hilarious account of that end-to-end. It was organised to the same standards as an RRA attempt, so utterly kosher.

Enjoyable programme as usual. That they only beat the previous distance by such a small amount, despite all the high-tech design of the bike, makes the real tandem record of the two Americans all the more impressive.
