Note to self: "You are nowhere near as fast on your MTB as your road bike"

Note to guy on the black & red Trek road bike, riding down Fairwater road at 9:15am this morning: "Is it really that bad being overtaken by a guy on an MTB that you will push back past them within a whisker of their bars, then to make the overtake stick jump a red light on a busy junction?"

That blokes a Nutter IMHO but for a roadie an MTB pass is the ultimate embarrasment its not allowed its an unwritten rule that MTB's must not past roadies

On a club ride many many moons ago young whipper snapper decided to take his brand new hard tail for a club spin our group leader says to me take him on up that hill before I knew it he was off and had several meters on me but for the life of me I could not catch the little bugger and conceded defeat just short of the top.

Recently about sevreal months ago MTB man (hard tail) decides he wants to take me on so i dropped him but to his credit he got back on my wheeel but only after some traffic at the lights slowed me down by this time he was blowing out of his backside and gasped with excitement at catcing me up just at this point the lights turned green so I put the hammer down in the end he gave up.

So whilst Im not condoning that type of behaviour you MTB types have to respect us rodies and even if you can pass dont

Not a race, the guy was napping (sauntering at very low speed) so I overtook him, as even on the MTB I was cruising at a higher speed. Must have woke him up as he started crunching gears and increased effort to re-overtake me. I was right behind him till he decided to RLJ...

I use the MTB and give him another race. Lay the rules out to em though. No RLJ or drafting motor vehicles lol

Hardtails with the right tyres are surprisingly quick - especially up hills as they have lower and better spaced gears.

I commuted for 2 weeks over the summer on my hardtail as the other bikes had mechancials and I set some of my fastest commutes on it.

When my Brompton had gearing problems I commuted for just over a month on my old hardtail with semi-slick tyres - it was fantastic. A lot easier to get up to a decent speed, better braking and generally more enjoyable.

Unfortunately I had to get the folder fixed by the end of the schoool summer holidays as there was no way of getting on the train with the full-size bike once the term had started...

I posted a couple of weeks ago about a fella on a road bike that appeared to be busting a gut to make sure he got in front of me on my MTB, saw him again last week only this time it was me that caught him up, as with Defy78 I was just cruising more quickly. He glanced round as we were approacing a mini roundabout and clocked me about 10' away, had another check to see me still sat behind him, then leapt up on the pedals and was off like Cavendish. I guess he must have seen your advice before Edge

I overtook a guy on an MTB today, but he managed to keep up with me. He had much bigger legs than me though, so he'd probably annihilate me if he was on a road bike.

How about a roadie on an MTB - found myself explaining I was a roadie as I passed a guy on his road bike -I'd been off roading, and needed to use the road up a steep hill to ride home down the canal - passed him with the tyres whirring.

I don't believe this is the ultimate embarrasment, being overtaken by a bloke in a suit and tie on a Boris Bike is surely worse. This happened to me earlier this week. (Fortunately I was on the Boris Bike, not the Bianchi!)

There are a couple of points I'd like to raise here. Firstly how does this rule pertain to hybrids? Is it just as taboo to pass aroadie on a hybrid as it is on a MTB?
Secondly, I'm not going to pass anyone I see who is carrying a hammer. No way.

Surely the ultimate embarrasment would be to be overtaken by Boris in a suit and tie on a Boris bike.

I got scalped in Hyde Park during the summer by someone on an MTB. Felt like a total tool until i pulled up beside him at Hyde Park Corner - bastard had shaven legs...
