Hey folks
I'm in the learning curve still but my mtb bike had by feel and play a worn bb
So I exposed it to clean and replace/renew
First off I was taken aback how much grime was Inside the bike bb shell ...and how it got there
The drive side bearings seen smooth enough
The nds are terrible ...there was a good explanation to this from alex Bay I found in my first attempt to read up on this
I could not find what I was after so here we are and I'm after your informed help

Can i remove tbe fibre "washer" on drive side to expose the bearings anyways and replace ?
The nds bearings do not seem to have a fibre washer but a rubber 0 ring round it that is i asumes sealed by the flower washer between the bearing and the nds crank
This rubber seal seems very perished and I think the whole cartridge needs replaced ..

If the above is not possible then i don't mind buying an extractor to remove ( I'm not going to start making things up then hitting with a hammer )the whole cartridge and replace both
The new installation documents page from sram detail to press the bearings into the threaded cups so I again assume they will Indeed be able to be extracted and avoid having to buy 2 new cups with bearings pre installed

Just for info...along with the grime inside the bb there seemed a very distinct lack of grease etc

The wavy washer should be on the drive side if needed. If you are handy you can remove the bearings from the cups and replace. The bearing code is on the seal.

The top hat (plastic washer) on drive side can be removed. GXPs don't last too long if you don't grease them regularly by removing the seal. I replaced mine with a Praxis Works GXP, but even that, I've changed the enduro bearings. Mine is on a MTB so gets a hard life.

New bearings are about £10 a side with postage, so might be as cheap to replace the lot. Praxis are £35ish from memory.

Yes.

The top hat is just a spacer, behind it is the bearing. Pop the seal off with a pin or pick and regrease. You might benefit from removing the cup and flushing the crap out before regreasing. My top hat used to creep out towards the crank, so I installed a piece of 23mm road tube on first to keep it pressed in place.

You can get replacement bearings, but you may need a blind bearing puller (I have one) rather than drifting it out.

On my Praxis, the drive side just presses into the cup, the non drive side is pressed in place but has a circlip to retain it due to the design of the axel.

Di you have a link for these bearings
The shops only do the full bb yes at 35ish
Theres a specialist bearing shop near to me but he has not come across the NDS bearing so he cannot help
Theres no code on the NDS bearing so I'm not getting any luck on a search
Nor could I find the bearing codes on srams documents

Drive Side (do check reviews for Standard GXP, but I've no reason to see why not - check your existing ones.

Thanks for your time on this fossy
I got drive side from airo bearings

https://www.airevelobearings.com/product/mr22237-2rs-truvativ-steel-bearing/

The shops told me to replace the whole bb as the cups don't like the bearings being pushed and pressed ???
You seem to slightly disagree I think ad you do in fact service/ repair ....what's your houghts
It's one of my older and less used FS mtb

I tried to drift out the bearings from a GXP after removing the circlips and they are a very tight fit and wouldn't budge, I gave up in the end. Suspect you would need to heat the shell to remove them and likewise when reinstalling unless you have a suitable bearing press.

I got the NdS out ok with a blind slide hammer type puller ..it never had a circlip on
I would have preferred a wind out puller but the bb face was not wide enough to get the puller " cups" on
I have left the DS in as it's ok

Mine is Praxis and the bearings are Enduro, so I knew mine would come out ! If you've got the tools - I have a blind bearing puller with a slide hammer - came out easy, then used the bearing presses to pop them back in.

Thing is, the standard GXP isn't that expensive as a unit. The Praxis one is a bit more expensive and is better finished, so replacing the bearings made sense. They don't last as long as square taper !

Now that I know bearings are available etc ( thanks fossyant )
I elected to remove tbe DS bearing ( all be it seemed in ok condition) and to replace
This proved really hard to get out with sliding hammer .in comparison to NDS which came out easy...ish
The DS is now out ...but I'm not experienced enough to say that the external cups are ok after this effort
Inside the bearing face are 3 uniform grooves that look like they were manufactured into the cups ( not defects from the slide hammer)
I know you cannot see them but do you guys know if cups are fragile or if they can take some abuse from a slide hammer to be re used
