I have lost a lot of interest in football over the last few years, (not all to do with my team being crap )
I see lads at work struggling to pay bills but still managing to find money to go and watch City or United every week, those players are on 100,000+ and those poor saps are paying their wages

I'd forgotten all about Winston Bogarde. I remember at the time thinking that I could understand what he was doing, despite the outrage. I did pretty much the same thing for near on a year in my last salaried position. Hated it, but turned up and did (well, tried to do) what was required. I knew I wouldn't get a better paid job!

I still find the game rivetting to watch - at Premiership, Championship and even League 2 level.

But all the money has changed things off the pitch. The funny thing is, we were once interested only in what went on on the pitch - and usually only at 'our' club.

Now, the media (and 'lovers of football') expect me to be able to name the players' children, their injury record, know their salary, the car they drive, where they got married, who their agent is. It's all a bit silly, really.

But the football played professionally in the UK is of a wonderful standard and very entertaining.

I remember Aldiles, Villa, Molby, Cantona, Yeboah, Ravanelli, Bergkamp, Anelka et al coming over through the years. Each added his own little bit of lustre (maybe not Molby) but in these days of teams with one British player those great names might barely register on the mind.

These are wonderful times for the football TV viewer. Ticket prices are obscene, but clearly people are keen (stupid) enough to pay them. I see two or three Prem games a year and a few League 2.

It's still a wonderful game.
