Some of the muslim kids that I teach have expressed interest in pie eating - I kid you not.

When I questioned them, they said that pie eating had never been on their families agenda and they hadn't been curious until they had smelt my corned beef and vegetable pies being re-heated at school.

Further questioning revealed that they didn't think that halal pies existed. Have I discovered a niche market?

I have promised to make some pies for them and have found some halal corned beef which sorts out the meat filling.

The next sticking point is that pastry.

Has any CCer made shortcrust pastry with vegetable fat instead of lard?

How successful was it?

I always make an apple pie when my vegan friend visits and just use margarine in the pastry. I cut it in with a pastry tool so it doesn't get too melty. Turns out surprisingly good.

I think that should be someone's sig line.

Isn't most commercial pastry made with hydrogenated vegetable oil anyway?

When I was 21 I worked in a bike factory called Comrade Cycles in Darlaston. They had a state-of-the-art oven for drying the frames on the line and I couldn't understand why the Pakistani assembly workers kept nipping inside the oven towards lunch time - until I worked out that they were putting their lunches up on a hot shelf to warm them up!

I was referring to home baking. Commercial pies rarely cut the mustard.

The repurposing of industrial oven was not confined to asian assembly workers. Several of my school mates got apprenticeships with Whessoe, a pressure vessel manufacturer, as welders and they used to use the ovens used to preheat some specialist welding rods as pie warmers. They got severe bollockings whenever they were caught doing it as it potentially compromised the integrity of the welding.
