Is this going to be 'free' like a 'free' winter check at a car garage (sorry sir, your shock absorbers are goosed, your brakes need replacing, the exhaust is shot and two of your tyres are almost ready for changing)?

Hmm I wouldn't take my car there as they are robbing barstools. Needed my bike servicing and sadly couldn't afford it. I'm hoping it's better than nothing.

Im going to use the free service after all its a free service. As long as they don't mess with the bike to the point its worse off then before its all good. If they say stuff needs fixing I will just say ok thanks for the service and leave. Bikes in fine condition nothing needs changing its just brakes and gears and all that other shoot I cant or refuse to amend. :P

From the stories and seeing the staff in the stores I fear its going to be some ugly teenage drop out who's going to try and adjust brakes with a brick. With my bike getting damaged in the end of it all.
I'm just going to hope there is like some secret bike god in the back and the chavs are bard from the area.

The guys who took mine seemed nice enough. I asked some reasonable techie questions and he answered them with no problems. There was a pinarello being fettled in the workshop which put my mind at rest and they do have some quality bikes for sale (albeit some are bloody orrible)

Well i'm 6ft 1 and i've had some try and sell me 54 frame with them having no idea how a bike works apart from the wheels go round and shoot happens. Its a mixed bag.

My bike is a second hand purchase but unused and like new. Just want it checking over

Halfords do sell some decent bikes, but the rule of thumb is if you must buy a bike from them ask them to leave it in the box untouched and get someone else to build it if you're not able to. Reason being they are minimum wage oiks who don't give a fig, and there are too many horror stories of dangerously built bikes by them to even risk it IMO.

So asking them to check over a bike they have not even sold in the first place is like asking me to plan your dream wedding for you*

There's no such thing as a free lunch, and even if they only claim to have fettled your gears, chances are they'll be in a worse state than when it went in.

For anyone not sure about setting up their gears do yourselves a favour and watch this video, it's not witchcraft, (unless you work at Halfords!),

Why would you need 54 frames, or is that the frame size in inches?

Hmmm. I did have reservations. My brake was rubbing on the rim other than that the bike was fine. Hopefully they'll manage that ok ...
