Why does Vernon sound bitter - it's Cyberknight who is querying why the threshold hasn't been increased...maybe I'll never get the point?

Personally I'd like a tax rebate for not using C2W...never going to happen though

The logic he gave for not increasing it is just bizarre.

The minimum wage increases every year to take account of increased cost of living. Are bikes somehow excempt from economic presssures?

Did you need to spend more than £1000 on a bike to get to work? I expect this is the reason - you too could write to your MP and ask him / her to take up with the treasury

I wish my salary had gone up in the last 3 years to cover the increased cost of living...how nice for those whose has, especially if in the public sector  Anyhow, not getting into the politics

As far as I understand it, the £1000 limit is to do more with the legislation around credit and loans than it has to do with tax or benefits.

In the regulations it says:

9.1 Consumer Credit Licence
Any employer entering into the scheme will need the cover of a consumer credit licence. In order to facilitate the scheme the OFT has issued a group consumer credit licence designed to cover employers setting up Cycle to Work schemes so that employers need not apply individually for credit licences for this purpose. Employers will be covered by the group licence so long as they are undertaking activities within its terms. The group licence covers only consumer hire business, (not the making of hire-purchase agreements – see below) for the purpose of providing employees with bicycles and or bicycle equipment up to the value of £1000, including VAT and not taking into account any income tax exemption under an employee benefit scheme, that is, the market price the employer pays or seeks to recover from the employee by way of hire charges.
If employers also undertake regulated business other than that described in the group licence or wish to offer packages in excess of £1000, they will need to obtain a standard licence to cover that business. The Cycle to Work Group Credit Licence can be seen at http://www.oft.gov.uk/Business/licence/group.htm

So, if you can get your employer to take out thier own credit licence, you can go over the £1000 provided by the government group licence.

As to why it hasn't increased with RPI, I doubt it is high on the list of things concerning HMG ATM and as has already been posted, you can still get a good commuter for this amount.

Hang back a while, its the tour and olympics effect, they are getting more custom so as usual they put there prices up.
But it'll die down and then the prices will lower.
Besides its the wrong end of the year to get the most out of your bike so i'd
just keep a eye out and look until you se a bike at a price you will pay.
Meanwhile use a old bike and exercise until you get the new beast, then you'll be ready to
enjoy it so much more.
