Winstanley.

If you order something decently priced they just keep your money until you ask for it back.
Strange company.

Cubist from my personal experience which is all I have to go on they are certainly not very good. Your personal experience differs. So which one of us is right?
Your post above read that you disagreed that Halfords had their uses, and had nothing to do with economics or loss-leaders. I pointed out that you can buy spares, accessories and consumables from them at reasonable prices and a times when al LBS is closed. That's pretty useful IMHO. You haven't actually spelled out the reasons why you dislike them so I have no reason, at this stage to share your hatred of them. You have spoken of cheap rubbish to sold off as bargains, yet none of the reviews of the Garmin Edge 800 I have read has suggested its rubbish.

I don't get your point. They are both selling a discounted Trail bundle Edge 800, at an online price of £320

Google the same details and you find they are the cheapest online price at the moment for that bundle. Do you hate Halfords because you think you ought to?

That's the point there sale price is the same price as a lot of other dealers out there, that is not what i call a sale, but like most companies they inflate the price then spend thousands on telivision adverts telling you it's a cheap price, i have had a couple of not so good dealings with halfords and i would not deal with them again, no differant to any other dealers i have had probs with, but i will always praise the good dealers.

Strange company.

This too is my experience. They appear to advertise a lot of stock they do not have. The website will allow you to buy stock they do not have. When your item does not arrive they admit it is not in stock and then are painfully slow to refund your payment (10-14 days IIRC!). When we are talking about whole bikes that cost at least £200 and not small components they are obviously sitting on a lot of money that they have no right to have!
I ordered a junior bike and then had the above experience. The bike was still for sale the day after they admitted it was not available in the uk anymore. It was still for sale, a few days later and even a few weeks later. I tried a dummy purchase after a few weeks via the website and they were still accepting orders for the bike. Many of the alternatives I might have considered for the unavailable bike were also, strangely, unavailable. IMO if it smells fishy and looks fishy then trust your senses!!!

If you read the google comparison link I posted you'll see that the two companies ar ethe cheapest by quite some margin. They haven't inflated the price first, the recommended retail price is considerably higher than the price they are offering it at.

In the link I posted no less than 16 retailers are selling the edge 800 for £400, yet I don't see you railing at their profiteering. I accept that you dislike Halfords, but you haven't told us why. Selling a gps unit for £80 below RRP isn't the evidence I need to understand your hatred.

One has.

A Winstanley price match ain't necessarily a price match as myself and a few of have pointed out!

If it makes any of you feel better Halfords have recently dismissed a number of staff who fall short of their high standard of customer service.
If you want to have your say about your experiences there you can fill in a customer satisfaction survey - you may even win a prize! - and members of staff who repeatedly get bad feedback will be either re-trained or let go.

I made a special trip to Winstanley's in Wigan when I was looking for a bike.

The place itself was very difficult to find, and their 'showroom' looked smaller than my living room.
By way of stock, they had little or nothing compared to what was advertised on their website.

I was only in there for about 5 minutes and left without anyone asking what I was after.

No decent bike shops within an hours drive of where I live so its either order on t'internet of Halfrauds, not been on the bike for "a while" and found that my cycling shorts had shrunk in the cupboard  so saw that Halfrauds had a 20% off sale and reserved a pair on line ................ next morning gets a phonecall from local branch "sorry the shorts you reserved we do not stock" wtf??? thats not what it says online ... "sorry we haven't done a stock take for ages there are loads of things out of stock, but we have an alternative you can have for the same price" great! drive 6 miles to the shop to be told "oh sorry we don't have your size in stock" at this point all i wanted to do was throttle the spotty per-pubescent little shoot!!!! obviously you don't have to be a moron to work there BUT IT HELPS!!! I don't suffer fools gladly I have a tendency to smack the ********

Do they, that is a well kept secret then.

Take that big huge bag of chips of your shoulder ^_^, fact is they do have some use and in my experience they have been woeful in some ways and superb in others in sorting problems out for me.Do I shop there all the time no, would I refuse to shop there no!

No chips here, they just are not as good I find as many other options, mass advertising convinces people they are maybe better than they actually are. I much prefer to use specialist for everything I buy for bikes or cars, your choice is just that yours choice.
