For a gentle starter you could take a five mile spin around the Alster Lake near the city centre, shared with joggers and walkers who usually keep to their own side of the path.
For a round trip you might consider a trip on the cycle friendly ferry from Landungsbrucken to Finkenwerder to access the west side of the river. Depending on your wishes/time you could cycle down the west side of the river to Wischhafen where the ferry takes you back across the river to Gluckstadt, then cycle back towards Hamburg along the east side of the river.

Well I managed 4 days in the most glorious sunny weather and summer temperatures. I started with the Alster trip, did some cycling in the Alten Land, the south side of the river, the north side of the river and the Sachsenwald.

I hired a touring bike from Zweiradperle for 11 euro per day including lock and helmet. It's only a couple of mins from the central station and had a decent spec. For short breaks, it's not worth taking a bike as they have a wide range to choose from and you can book in advance. They are well maintained, clean bikes. I'll go again when I might get an MTB and cycle in the Lüneburger Heath.

Mind you, the warm sunny weather helps too!

You certainly picked your week for it. The weather broke on Saturday and it's barely been in double figures since! Looks like you had a great time.

We head up into the Lüneburger ourselves a lot with the kids, their only 2 and 5, but they both love cycling there.
