Coming from Brighton to Swanage via Ringwood by car.
Is it worth getting the ferry to Shell Bay rather than circumnavigating Bournemouth and Poole?
It would be around 5pm on a Friday afternoon.

What you'll gain on the swing, you'll lose on the roundabout. That will be a busy time at the ferry.

If there is no queue at the ferry it is loads quicker. The trouble is once you're in the ferry queue and if it's massive to then go and detour around takes an age. If you want a reliable journey then drive around but that road will also be busy at that time.

So it looks like it's probably not worth it at Friday rush hour. I have/had no idea how popular the ferry would be given that it's going to somewhere a bit out of the way.

The queue for the ferry can be very long that time of the evening, probably quicker to drive around.

Fast and careful!
we travel from salisbury to swanage often and never use the chain ferry if driving only on the bike, the only place via ringwood you may get traffic avoiding poole is on the Wimborne bypass after this there are plenty of rat runs across to sandford /wareham but if you go to bere regis wareham will be well sign posted, some great riding in the area if you get the chance
