Hands up any left-handers who went to school in the days when they made you write with a ridiculous left-handed nib on your fountain pen.

Like many of my fellow southpaws, I soon developed the technique (that I use to this day) of hooking my hand around the top of my writing and using an ordinary nib.

It seems I'm in good company:

I was hammered by various teachers for hooking my hand and was forced to write "proper fashion." so, I now write with my head tilted way over to the right to see what I'm doing.
Still have appalling writing. I obviously blame my lefthandeness but often encounter fellow lefties with impeccable hand writing. In all honesty, a slovenly, careless attitude is more likely the cause of my illegible scrawl.

Yes, a right-handed friend of mine does it too.

There's a theory that "inverted" left-handed writers have their brains wired differently such that the the right side of the brain controls the right side of the body, rather than the more normal left/right crossover.

In another study based on language tasks, the results indicated that inverted left handers used both hemispheres equally instead of just the one usually associated with language.

My handwriting is awful too , I have a pal who makes pens as a bit of a sideline so have a couple of quite unique fountain pens and ballpoints that I use to give my awful scrawl a slightly nicer finish.

Left-handed non-hooky handwriter here. I never had to use a fountain pen, being youthful enough that the Berol Handwriting Pen was the stylo-du-jour. I did try cartridge pens but never got on with them. I don't get on with gel pens, either - I prefer a Staedtler Stick or a Bic Medium ant day.

I think my handwriting's ok - far better than that of my boss. I did have a phase for a time after learning Russian at school of mixing my letters, though - I kept writing 'g' for 'd'.

Being ambidextrous I used to be able to write with either hand, but only mirror image with the left. in fact I could write with both hands simultaneously from a central line. I'm out of practice with my left hand now, but can still scrawl a decipherable mirror script.

David Cameron is also a left hander. Not that i'm a fan or anything, i just noticed him writing with it on tv the other week.

When I started school in Ireland I used to get a ruler across the knuckles from the nuns for writing with my left hand, which I still use today. That and other things fostered my life long hatred of nuns, a bunch of sexually repressed weirdos without a streak of human decency in them.
My mother has similar tales to tell of the senseless cruelty of nuns.

But back on track - I sat an exam a couple of years ago. I was told beforehand I could write on my laptop and print it out. And that I could probably get away with writing in english. But no sirreebob I had to hand in the work handwritten in norwegian! My command of norwegian isn't brilliant - except when talking about the weather! I used the full five hours and just scraped a pass. My right hand hadn't seen that much action since I was a teenager!
