it's really an advertisement for his book, but the short video is nicely put together and while there are no great original insights he does set things out elegantly. A sort of Thoreau in five minutes thing.

My cycling 'adventures' are, in part, in pursuit of beauty, but the beauty of the world I cycle through is generally a product of human history rather than of a vast, undisturbed nature. I've gone across North America and Siberia by car and train, and, at times, let the endlessness of forest wash over me, but, if I'm honest, however long the journey I'm happier plugging in to some collective recollection. A long time ago I spent four months by the side of a lake, but, even if I didn't travel more than a few hundred metres from my house more than once a week, the company I kept provoked reflections of a very social order.

M. Tesson is both right and wrong about time. I envy him his ability to do nothing, but when you're fifty eight and in possession of a deeply dodgy cardiac pedigree, months on end by a lake are not on the agenda.
