I will be out to play Saturday morning, starting say 0900, up to say 1300. Would anyone care to join or suggest "do not miss" destinations preferably to the NE/Hitchin. Assume 25kph rolling average and naturally kaffepaus.

I won't be back in time, due to attending Kim's Friday nightride from Birmingham.

However, you can't go wrong heading out on the little lanes towards Hitchin, as they're lovely ups and downs, as you'll be going over several ridges. If you go through Kimpton, watch out for the state of the High Street, as it's got more potholes than the Somme. Emily's Tea Shop in Whitwell is highly recommended. Why not try a big loop around Stevenage heading out through Knebworth, Walkern, Weston, Hitchin, Lilley, Kings Walden, Whitwell and then back to Harpenden. About 50 miles total.

FD, many thanks. I shall watch out for High St Kimpton - given my Surrey Hills experience I may not be impressed.

I have cancelled given the high probability forecast of strong easterly winds and snow. Good luck to those that venture far from home this weekend.

Good thing the weather was crap then!! I didn't even see your post until now!!!
If you re-schedule I will most probably join you, but my advice would be to give people a bit more time.. 3-4 weeks I would say it's fairly good notice! We are quite a few in the area and by the lack of posts I can ensure you they have missed it, same as I did!

MMF: I did not/will not think in terms of a pukka CC forum ride which requires good notice, as you suggest, and prior and proper planning; more like a casual pick up hopefully with a few people who contribute some local knowledge. This somewhat impromptu style will perhaps give me an opportunity to ride with a small local group for a longish half day and then visit MilL who lives in Harpenden. When spring arrives I will float the idea again and hopefully B-612 (is that a v clever reference to something I do not recognise/know about?) is not a million miles away.

PS: amazing avatar!

Totally with you! In that case whenever you fancy coming up these parts of the woods, feel free to PM me (as well as posting a thread ofcourse) and I will make sure the local CCers and a couple of friends will be noticed as well. Even if I cannot attend I have quite a few routes available to suit all mileage/scenery requirements.

As far as tea stops go, Emilys at Whitwell is a sound idea. The Old Post Office at Datchworth is rapidly becoming my favorite, and Halseys in Hitchin is good too.The Old Brewery in Walkern is a good bet for a Saturday (it's closed on Sunday), and I have a soft spot for the garden center at Rushden.
