The section of the North Sea cycle route between Den Helder and Boulogne was my introduction to foreign cycle touring. Apart from just enjoying the experience, it was a good confidence builder, encouraging me to take on more adventurous routes in the following years.

I'd do it the other way around though, South to North, so you are not battering into a strong headwind with the sun in your eyes!
If you want to 'try before you buy' introduction to European cycling then Calais (or Boulougne, Dunkirk) to Zeebrugge or Hook of Holland would be a good start and simple to arrange, or one of the German River routes
