Nope....just bought Mrs Fossy a bike and a tag along for Miss Fossy............... now't for me............ just picked them up tonight....

My Wife was well impressed with her new bike - cost 4 times more than her old one, and that was from a 2 minute spin in the car park.......... so a £400 (£50 off in sale, was £450) bike is well better than a £120 from 15 years ago...ahem............................

He added that a bike might also appeal to a man undergoing a mid-life crisis because it gives him an opportunity to spend time by yourself and contemplate.

It's a funny old world we live in, if spending time by yourself and contemplating is looked upon as being odd.

I think people have realised that spendin £36 per month for gym membership is pointless when you only go twice a week to stare at some fat birds sweaty a*se on an exercise bike for an hour breathing in germs and catching verrucas in the showers.

For the same money you can have a really nice bike that'll last for years and breath fresh air (unless you're in London)

 Hear hear - we can all do without seeing sweaty bloaters arses (and having to pay for it). Only see fit arses out on road bikes....whoopee!

I used to go to a gym, after several sessions eyeing each other up I was getting close to speaking to a really fit girl there.... until she was on a machine next to me and she farted.

I've stayed outdoors for my exercise since then.

For me, tomorrow, it's the purchase of either a Pinarello FP3 with Centaur or a Willier Izoard, also with Centaur. I haven't decided which one yet but the Willier is in a slight lead. I am not having a mid-life crisis. I think.

My mid life crisis must be far worse than I thought, I've just ordered a new bike, it will be the 7th one I've bought since turning 35 & I've still got over 3 years before I'm 45

I sort of know the feeling. Susie was just a little peeved when I blew three grand on my first Colnago. She stopped me keeping it in the bedroom, which I thought was a tad unreasonable. But as some of you will know....my evil plan has won the day!

So this isn't you then?

Bicycles - UK - June 2010

In 2009, the value of the bicycle market grew by more than 4%, despite a 10% fall in the number of bicycles sold. With nearly all bicycles sold in the UK being imported, the weakness of the pound led to a sharp rise in prices .

A shortage of stock last year led to some companies bringing forward 2010 models to fill the void.

Retailers had underestimated demand, particularly in low to mid-range road bikes in the £300-600 band.

Sales of bicycles are being stimulated by Cycle to Work schemes, offering significant discounts on bicycles bought through employers, and a wider range of retail finance, particularly interest-free deals.

These schemes are also encouraging buyers to trade up to more expensive models....

These schemes are also encouraging buyers to trade up to more expensive models.

The e-bikes (electric bicycles) sector is generating considerable excitement in the industry, with sales growing rapidly from a tiny base.
These products are seen as a ‘half-way house’ between bicycles and mopeds/scooters.
Longer term, e-bikes could play a role in introducing many more people, particularly women, to cycling.

Bicycle retailing is becoming increasingly competitive, with the likes of Halfords competing with specialists (such as Evans, independents and online-only operations like Wiggle and Chain Reaction).

Of greater concern to the trade are the major grocery retailers, such as Tesco and Asda.
The grocery retailers are showing an interest in growing their share of the bicycle market, having already trialled some lines at extremely low prices.

Cyclists can be divided fairly evenly into the one in eight adults who ride regularly (once a week or more often) and the similar proportion who ride occasionally (less often than once a week).

Non-cyclists are most likely to be deterred by the perception that it is too dangerous to ride a bicycle on the road.

The BBC have picked up on this as well.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-10965608

I find the way this is being discussed very sexist and stereotypical. Women, of course, have no interest in cycling/buying a nice bike/getting fitter so they can get up whichever hill is next on the challenge list.... oh no, keep the little woman happy by buying an expensive bike so she then has the excuse to buy a pair of shoes???

(The fact that I bought my not-cheap bike last year, and certainly fall into the age-bracket called 'middle-aged' is, of course, neither here nor there...)

I quite liked the BBC article on it. Clearly a lot is tongue in cheek, but a lot is also spot on! Reassuring that I'm not the only one who browses £4000 bikes that I can never afford!
