Have you ever lent something to someone or asked someone to look after something for you, then they refused to give it back saying it's their's now?

I asked the women's institute if they'd let me put my 'beloved' palm tree in the garden of the community centre across from my flat last summer after it'd been hacked at by some residents in these flats. They said yes and after a while came across with a trolley to move the tree across the road, leaving it in its pot near to the entrance of the building. It's been there over a year now with me going across to feed and weed it every now and then. The other week one of the women's institute members saw me and thanked me for donating my palm tree to them. I didn't say anything, thought to myself 'but I haven't given it to them I asked if I could keep it there so it wouldn't get hacked at again'! When/If I move from this flat I live in I'd like to take the palm tree with me, but the women's institute think I gave it to them, not just asked if I could keep it there. Then the other day a woman said she'd look after my dog if I ever have to go into hospital, need a break or just anything. I'm now thinking what if I take her up on her offer, then she says I gave her my dog to keep?!🤷‍♂️

There has been a miscommunication!
Take a few cutting of the palm tree, they are easy to propagate
Then, when the time comes, take with you what suits the new place better, the big palm or the wee one(s).

glancing on my way out at this thread and reading your conundrum, I thought I would suggest that in your position I would thank the institute for looking after the palm and hope they enjoy many more years with it. The buy another palm when you are ready. As for the offer to look after your dog, if it is unlikely you would ever need it, forget about it.

I did once give a very good retro football shirt to someone who supported the club and was a bit down on his luck. On asking the next time I saw him if he liked the shirt he told me he's sold it for a fiver on fleabay, but I suppose I did give it, not lent it so.... 🤷‍♂️

Yes. As a student I shared a house with several musicians. One of them borrowed a bodhran I was learning to play. It's still not been returned 30+ years later despite being used on several of their releases. Oh, and they also damaged my new guitar - bought to replace one I'd loaned to someone else that also disappeared (I recently gave that away).

I guessed it wasn't coming back, so about 15 years ago I bought a replacement. I still can't play it that well.

When my then ladyfriend had a bloke from the USA must be going on for forty years ago stay in her flat while visiting over here, he left an electric guitar behind on returning to the US. She didn't know about the guitar which I took home, intending to teach myself how to play it. After a few hours I gave up and sold it to a second hand shop!

Not lent. But I went travelling around the world for 19 months. Gave my car to my brother to look after etc and rented out my house and so on. My sister got my music collection and hifi separates, speakers, and the stands etc to look after. When I returned and went to retrieve my belongings; my sister had decided to paint my fairly expensive vibration isolated hifi stands in silver and not very well.

I've lost a lot of LPs in the past, & they've not been returned

Bro-in-law borrowed a very good pair of Shimano cable cutters & torque wrench a few years ago, but as he passed away a couple of years ago, & his widow's still emotional. I don't want to ask for them back (yet)

When our mother died eight years ago my brother took her 1956 Bush radiogram which her parents bought and had been in the family ever since. He said he wanted it for his son who was 'into vinyl'. He didn't ask for my permission which annoyed me immensely, but to make matters worse on asking if it was still working he told me he'd binned it when the turntable stopped working!🫤 The only consolation was that similar ones were on sale on such as e-bay for fifty quid, so I doubt he made much if any money from it if he had sold it.

Lent a DVD player to a mate, his cat pissed in it. He was found trying to dry it out with a fan heater, an aromatic experience 🤢
