Beat me to it,there are 2 different sizes, Imperial and JIS

Just for clarity and future reference... which is the larger?

I had the opposite problem once, a Raleigh frame which kept splitting the crown race because the locating boss was oversize. My LBS had a tool to trim it down for me.

Had one like this, and a nifty bit of filing solved the issue.
Together with the shim method, a mismatch can easily be remedied to get a decent interference fit.
I'm saying all this, coming from an engineering background in my early years, so for me it's second nature.

On the upside, getting the slightly too big crown race to fit with a beer can shim worked a treat. (FYI, it was Punk IPA).

On the downside, the new headset needs a couple of spacers which i don't have and I only realised this at 4pm on Friday and they're not going to be posted until tomorrow at the earliest... so the bike is off the road for a few more days at least.

But on the upside... the weather is sh!t all week so i think i timed it quite well :okay:

On the downside... I think I was so peed off with my loose headset that I think I must have binned it when I replaced it! (I don't remember doing that, but I haven't seen it since so I probably did!)
