Hello

Just joined your forum, never really done anything like that before even though I'm in IT ;)

I was cycling well through last winter (around 500 miles a month) and did the Cheshire Cat in March, 100 miles in 5hrs 37 ins but started getting severe pains in my right knee. I was diagnosed with severe tendonitis and told to rest for 3 months which I did.
I had to postpone my LeJog which was due to take place in June. I thought I'd put it back until September, so I cancelled and re-booked everything.
My physio allowed me to go for a 20 minute ride at the end of June but my knee was stiff and not right so he referred me to a specialist. After an MRI scan I've been diagnosed with a torn medial meniscus (cartilage) and now I'm having surgery next monday.
So I'm not expecting to be on my bike until sometime in October.....its not been my best year but I hope to start training for next year. I've had to cancel every sportive I was in for and LeJog (for the second time!). I've two new bikes, one hasn't been ridden and one has 40 miles on it.
My missus doesn't understand how frustrating its been but I thought I'd come and say hello, as that song goes...."Things can only get better"

Welcome:biggrin:

Yeah, some years can be really rough. But like you say, it's got to get better.. At least your knee is something that can get better, eventually.

In the meantime, hang out here and see how silly we can all get...;)

Yes. Hello ajc - silly is not the word...
...mad, stupid, crazy maybe;)
Hands and boompsadaisy only - until the other bit gets better anyway!

Hands ***** and Boomps-a-Daisy!
I like a bustle that bends
Hands ***** and Boomps-a-Daisy!
What is a boomp between friends?
Hands ***** now don't be lazy
let's make the party a WoW!
And it's hands ***** and Boomps-a-Daisy!
Turn to your partner and bow - Bow Wow!

Welcome AJC. Hope you get to get back on the bikes sooner than expected ;)

FWIW I had a similar injury pre my cycling days and I found that regular cycling helped the knee in the long term.

hey, ajc,
that's the pits about the knee:sad: Presumably it's not been caused by an incorrect position on the bike ???

I've had some knee probs this year too - it prevents me running but I can cycle  (whew!)

I know my main difficulty is holding back on the recovery exercises and not doing too much - I want it to be fixed TOMORROW ;)

Anyway, all the best for Monday - let us know how you get on and we'll try not to tell you all about the great rides we are doing !

head and shoulders, ***** and toes, (***** and toes,)
head and shoulders, **** and toes, (***** and toes,)
and eyes and ears ......... etc
(if you're that bit younger !)

Thanks for the welcome )
I'm kind of relaxed about the cycling now, I've been off the bike for so long that it'll be like starting all over again and that'll be kind of fun......honest...
My surgeon did ask about my position on the bike, but all three bikes are set up as close as they can be, my main hack bike has been used for over a year. Its probably down do age and over use ;)
Is it possible to do too much cycling ?

I know just what you mean. Frustrating isn't the word. I had LeJog planned for August and then September. Fell off my garage roof in early March and the injuries kept me off the bike till late July. Anyway here's the good news...took the bike on holiday and did 25-30 each day to start building up again. Last Sunday I decided to up things to 60 miles and to my surprise and delight it was only the last 6 miles that hurt, hurt a bloody lot but there you go. The main point is I had expected the fitness to have disappeared completely and have been surprised and pleased by how quickly I've got back to 60, I'm no targetting a 100 miler at the end of September.

Welcome ajc, hope the recuperation goes well and the knee will give plenty of bike miles in the future. Being off the bike is not nice but at least you can come here for some light relief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Paul,

I'm hoping to start my commute in November, thats 23 miles each way, but I may use the train for part of the journey until I'm back up to speed.
I've booked to go on Paris Roubaix in April which gives me something to aim at and then I'll sort out LeJOG in May/June. At least thats the plan unless some other part of my body packs up !
Good luck with your 100 miler

Thanks Keith, I'm hopeful it will sorted out on monday, my surgeon has operated on a number of premiership footballers and rugby league players so I should be a fairly mundane op for him, I hope!

the torn cartilage wasn't from cycling was it though?

after 20 years of sports, my torn cartilage came from walking into a chair in the dark, that really really hurt a lot, silent scream

and been off bike for three weeks after falling on the stairs (long emotional day out)
