Just popped by to say a big hello from Bristol, a big cycling city if ever there was one ! I have been a cyclist since I could walk (or cycle) but in recent years (no more than about 3 or 4) due to knee trouble, parenting and just general laziness, I have not cycled for a while. However, out with the old and in with the new so I am now determined to saddle up again with fresh enthusiasm.......I cycled for 8 years in London in my 20s so am pretty confident on the roads. Anybody else from this area ?

Best wishes - Rob

Hello to you in Bristol!

I'm new here too and you're in my old stomping/cycling ground. Cycling around London these days - a lot less hills than Bristol, but as you know, a million other challenges.

Come back quite regularly and partake in some hill climbs on a nobbly mountain bike, but the best rides are outside the city as you head out along the cycle paths and country roads.

How're you finding it there?

Did the path from Portishead through Pill vill;age then along the river into town last time I was over.
Good bacon sandwiches at the open air cafe by the city dock.

Theres several Bristolians on here so you will be in good company. :hello:

Wow, didn't know anything about the Red Bull Chasers, so thanks for the link. That looks like fun! Don't think my bike would cope in Bris hill races - nobbly tyres are good for offroading and fail miserably getting speed up Park Street - but would certainly give it a crack.

And - summerdays - I wish London had more hills! As you get more North Westerly - towards Hamstead and Highgate there are some real challenges - Dartmouth Park hill is a killer, generally you go from hill to hill up there, not including the 8 miles cycle to get there.

Found this little article on my perusal of Bristol articles -

Classic hills here!

And Banjo - yes, that little Cafe was mint! I say 'was' because if I'm thinking it was the 'Brunel Buttery', I heard it had a fire recently and got shut down. Actually - anyone know in Bris know if its back up and running?

Yes I've heard of the Bastard Hills of the North ... sounds like my idea of hell... I go out of my way to avoid some of those hills. I did meet one guy who did it on a Uni-cycle I think - utterly mad!!!

I could go and look sometime ... I need to take one of my kids down to show her some hoardings for her art, that are down that way.

That A38 hill is on my commute most days  (unless I go the "hilly" way :becool:).

I almost enjoy it these days... almost.

Edit: Oh, and welcome Rob!

I've had too many hills recently ... I gave up and walked part of Muller Road today ... just completely exhausted.

Wow - thanks for the link. What a great site. The Brunel Buttery caught fire very recently which was a real shame but it is back on its feet again now. It's THE place for a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea on a Sunday morning walk around the docks to check out all the new yuppie hutches that are springing up around there...
