Hello all,
I'm from Cornwall where I cycle a road bike to work and with a friend on weekends and a big heavy mountain bike with big apple tyres around town. Joined the forum to start to learn about how to maintain my own bikes and to look into cost effective ways of replacing the mountain bike with something that will be family friendly as we have a little one due in week.
I'm 32 and a special needs teacher.

Hi Nic.
Good to see you've joined the forum. It's a great site to learn and pick people's brains regarding everything to do with cycling. If you can't find answers to problems on here then you won't find them anywhere. I don't suppose the weather is helping you down there in your neck of the woods. You might have been better getting a canoe to work and back!!!
P.s. Congrats. :surrender:

Thanks for the welcome!
The weather has been okay really - I've managed to cycle each day this week, unless you want to go swimming. I guess it's the same all over the country, if you don't have right regard for the weather and get in the sea during a storm then it's going to hurt. Sadly, I think that someone died swimming after Christmas.

Couldn't believe what I saw on the news, of the risks some people were taking to get photos of the storms crashing over sea walls. As you say experienced people such as sailors etc particularly in your part of the world respect the sea and know how to treat it.

It's amazing how wary one has to be of the sea. 2 dads of friends were killed by it as I was growing up, 1 an experienced diver whose inexperienced buddy left him unaware that he was tangled in fishing netting and another experienced fisherman who was casting off a beach when a big wave pulled him out to sea. Just goes to show that even people who are used to its dangers can be under cautious.
Still, on a lighter topic, the shops in town were open today and doing good business with flood sightseers!

Welcome from me and a massive fan of Cornwall ! Love the place and cannot wait to get back down in October. We were down last year watching the big waves at Kynance Cove and the Lizard, truly amazing but like you say, you have to respect the weather and the sea. Congrats on the pending arrival,we have four of the little angels and although they can test you,it is the best thing in the world
