I'd concur with the hybrid as a first bike. It'll let you do a bit of both road and off road to see what you fancy. And given the state of Glasgow's roads...
Which actually brings me to something I've wondered about for some time. How do super-duper road bikes cope with badly pot-holed roads? Some of the roads I travel on are seriously bad. Do the jolts just go through to the rider or is there a risk of damaging the bike? Ditto kerbs.
