Welcome!

A lot of 50 milers + were once in simular circumstances it's nothing to be ashamed of when you're working your way out of it.

I think sometimes it leads to a greater value of fitness because after losing weight and gaining leg strength you begin to think you're walking on springs!

I understand the aversion to daylight exercise/being seen but everybody else is too busy wondering if you think they look silly, rather than ever thinking it about you.

Depending where in Leicestershire, try looking up the Cloud Trail which starts near Castle Donnington. It's a very nice paved off road section.

Thank you for your kind words Steady, I know sensibly you are right about other people but it never feels like that when it comes to trying. I am not too far from part of the Cloud trail and have thought of loading the bike up and trying it out. What is it like hill wise?

Blimey, that is an expensive drink but to be expected around Market Bosworth.

I was in South Derbyshire today infact - Marshalling the Great East Midlands Bike Challenge - a charity 50 mile ride starting and ending at Hicks Lodge. Had a fantastic day and helped the motivation massively.

Oh I know I'm still trying to convince myself too. It's perfectly flat towards Derby if my memory recalls it right, I've only done the whole thing once just to say I did it all, most times I just went as far as Tonge from Derby and turned back. It's an old disused train track and trains don't like hills either!

The only hilly section is the short quarry section the Leicester side of the A42, whilst short it got pretty steep up to the Top Brand finish of the Cloud Trail.

Parking up in King's Newton might be easiest and getting onto the Cloud Trail via Trent Lane and riding towards the A42 for as long as you feel like, or getting on via the A42 there's not too many cyclist friendly access routes to it apart from in King's Newton and Wilson, A42. I found that out when I decided it would be easy to pop over from Tonge and have a look at that Church that's on Breedon on the Hill and I ended up hauling my dual suspension bike up the steps into Tonge and then back down!

I was thinking of trying it from Worthington which is pretty close to me but it seems that Kings Newton might be more suitable. Thank you very much for the tip  Do you know what the total length of it is?

Your welcome, I found the Cloud Trail was a little gem of an off road route for me. I went back to check the map, just so I know what I'm talking about!

There's a parking lay by right by the Cloud Trail in Worthington which misses out the steep bit completely, here's a link to the route: http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId...4347D0DB59D1CAF22512481CDD9FB2A1D6E8A08911CBA. It's five miles in total one-way to Swarkestone Canal, which gives something to build up to and measure progress by. The villages are well marked so it's easy to set a target and then turn back.

The Worthington/Wilson end is usually pretty quiet in terms of dog walkers etc morning and afternoon.

Ahhhhh, the posh part of town, how do you get away with it being a Leeds supporter ?

I can't say a lot though, I am out towards Coalville - the land that time didn't forget, it just chose to ignore it !!
