Hi exbfb (love that name ) - your experiences are quite similar to those of my own(see my first post in this forum) - I've lost a lot of weight in the last year and just getting more seriously into cycling as a way to improve my fitness - loving it and I want to get out more, which isn't always easy when you have work and family commitments.
As for your 12 miles, that's fantastic - what I've found is that my mileage increased fairly rapidly the more I cycled, leaving room to let my body recover too. I've only been cycling for a few months, started off with 4-6 miles and this increased to 6-10 miles, then up to 15, then 20. And I know if I can do this, anyone can - have surprised myself at how quickly my body got used to cycling (the old sair bum problem is still there , though have just bought a pair of padded boxer shorts to hopefully deal with that!).
Good luck, and hope to see you on the forums!
Colin
