Hello everyone, I'm Charlie I'm based in both Manchester and Kent, am just getting started with getting serious about cycling thing. Have been riding an old 80s British built (but crap, Universal bikes plc) racer, which I have been gradually upgrading in the faint hope of eventually changing the frame. Have recently acquired a basically untouched raleigh reynolds 501 eclipse, it's in excellent condition apart from the tyres, I'm told its a mid 80s model will get pictures if anybody's interested, looks like it's literally never been ridden. Problem is its far too big for me, I'm about 5ft10 and this would suit someone over 6ft i reckon, will measure the frame. I'm looking to either trade or sell this bike, how much should i sell it for? It would be perfect if it wasnt too big for me.

Merry christmas and a happy new year to everybody as well.

hi Charlie, welcome to the forum. Don't know how much the bike is worth, but probably not a great deal I would think. You might find someone to do a trade on here, but I think you'll need to get more posts on the forum before you can use the classifieds forum I think?

Hello and welcome Charlie, and the snail is correct - you'll need to increase your post count before you can use the Classifieds forums - although chatting about classic 80's bikes will probably do that for you anyway ...

Cheers,
Shaun

Hello everyone, thankyou for the replies. To be honest with this bike i just want to get enough money to get something that is decent enough to ride around the city on, the bike i currently ride would be more like a hybrid by todays standards, it has 27x1 1/4 wheels and that suits me quite well, but it just doesnt cope with the daily use. I wouldn't mind getting something similar but not quite as rubbish.

Can anybody shed any light on the raleigh reynolds 501 eclipse? I'm told it was a very popular model at the time, like i said im a total amateur with all of this stuff. I've been told the 531 was the higher end reynolds tubing and the 501 was a more mid-range tubing, am I right in thinking this? I do think it would be difficult to find a bike of this age in a better condition, I reckon it's maybe been ridden once and has been kept totally dry it feels very new.

Really grateful for everyones responses, Thanks

Hi Charlie - You are not going to get a lot for the Raleigh unless a couple of absolute nutters from Japan start bidding against each other on eBay.

I'd guess around £50 - £80 tops.

as accountantpete said on a good day you should easily get £70 - 80 for the eclipse if as described , i doubt you and me would notice the differance in riding between a 531 and a 501 framed bike , i have ridden both and still do plus some old gas pipe ones and yes there is a differance but not enough unless you do a lot of riding to make it worthwhile .
